3. Microwave Devices: There are a variety of microwave technologies on the market that claim to offer permanent results, but the reviews have been mixed. What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an injectible filler that stimulates collagen production and produces long-lasting and natural-looking volume in the temples, cheekbones, under-eyes, jaw and chin. The chemical name of Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, which is structurally similar to absorbable sutures that stimulate healing on the inside of the body after surgery. Sculptra is used to restore volume and stimulate healing in several areas of medicine and surgery, and is quickly gaining popularity among plastic surgeons for producing long-lasting and natural-looking volume to the face.

Who should consider Sculptra?

You should consider Sculptra if you:

How is Sculptra different than other fillers?

1. It is not a “filler”.  When products like Juvederm and Restylane are injected, it is the product itself that provides the volume. This is not the case with Sculptra. Sculptra does not provide any volume on it’s own, but instead stimulates your body to produce collagen. The new collagen is what ends up providing the volume rather than the product itself.
2. The results are incredibly natural.  Because the volume is coming from newly produced collagen rather than the product, Sculptra tends to give a softer more natural look than other fillers. 3. The results are not immediate.  Since the final result is dependent on your own body’s collagen production, it takes a while to see results. Sculptra is typically administered as a series of 3 injections spaced 4-6 weeks apart, so the final result appears about 3-4 months after the first treatment. Most patients actually consider this a benefit and prefer the gradual onset of Sculptra over the immediately visible result of other fillers.
4. It lasts longer.  It may take more time to see the result, but once you see it, it lasts a lot longer! Juvederm and Restylane last about 4 months, and Radiesse may last 8-9 months. Sculptra can last up to 2-3 years! There is no other product that lasts this long, and this is another major difference that sets Sculptra apart from the crowd.
5. It costs more.  You’ve heard it before… “you get what you pay for”. The same is true with injectibles. The technology behind Sculptra is more advanced than other fillers, the result is more natural looking, and it does lasts much longer. Because of this, the initial cost of treatment is more expensive. However, if you consider that the other fillers need to be repeated 2-3 times a year, Sculptra actually turns out to be less expensive in the long run.

Is there any down time after Sculptra?

The answer to this question is “it depends”. If you are only treating a single area, like your cheekbones, the only downtime is limited to the remainder of the day of your treatment. You will be instructed to go directly home afterwards to relax and apply some ice packs, but there is very little true “down time” in most cases. If you are treating several areas of your face, you may want to plan for 24-48 hours of taking it easy and waiting for the swelling to resolve.

Although rare, it is possible to bruise after Sculptra treatments, so it’s always wise to schedule your treatments at least a week or two away from major events, parties, or other social gatherings. You should also be sure to stop drinking wine, stop taking Aspirin, Motrin, and Ibuprofen, and stop any herbal supplements (especially Green Tea, Vitamin E, Garlic, and St. John’s Wort) for at least one week before your treatments to lessen the chance of bruising.

What are the main risks of Sculptra?

1. Bruising.  As with all injectibles, minor bruising is a possibility. It’s always best to plan your treatments at least a week away from major events and social gatherings in case a bruise develops, but in most cases, bruises can be easily covered with makeup.
2. Swelling.  There will be some minor swelling after each Sculptra treatment. In most cases, patients actually like the look of the swelling because it gives them an idea of what the final result will look like. The swelling usually resolves within 2-3 days after treatment, and is rarely bad enough to prevent patients from going to work or out in public.
3. Lumps.  Lumps are a risk of any injectible therapy, and this is why it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions about massage after the procedure. With Sculptra, you will be instructed to massage the treated areas for 5 minutes 5 times a day for 5 consecutive days (The 5… 5… 5 Rule). Most lumps can easily be massaged flat over the course of a few days.

How long does Sculptra last?

Sculptra lasts more than 6 times longer than most injectible fillers (up to 2-3 years). There is no other product on the market that lasts as long as Sculptra, and this one of the major reasons to consider it if you are a candidate.

How much does Sculptra cost?

On average, Sculptra costs $1600-3000 per treatment, and 2-3 treatments are usually necessary.

In their study, men and women being pharmacologically treated for clinical depression received Botox injections to their glabellar region (the area between the eyes), and their level of depression was assessed 6 weeks later. In 80% of these patients, their level of depression improved significantly (in both subjective and objective measures). The patients noted that they generally felt better, and their scores on scientific examinations designed to measure their level of depression improved. In the placebo group, only 20% of patients noted an improvement.

“This is a very interesting study,” says New York Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nicholas Vendemia. “There are quite a few people in Manhattan that deal with significant levels of stress on a daily basis, and I’ve heard from many of them that they generally ‘feel better’ after their Botox treatments. They say things like ‘I just don’t feel as stressed out when my Botox kicks in’, and I’ve been hearing these testimonials so frequently that it is ironic that this study was just published.”

Dr. Vendemia adds, “It makes sense if you think about it. When you look angry, frustrated or tired all the time, people react to you as if you are those things, and that starts a feedback loop that can become a vicious cycle that keeps you feeling angry, frustrated and tired. How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin (aka pigment) in the hair follicles. The laser light is absorbed by the melanin which destroys the follicle and stops future hair growth.

Can anyone get Laser Hair Removal?

For the most past, yes, anyone can get laser hair removal. However, those with darker skin types have a higher chance of permanent pigmentation changes, such as hyper pigmentation (dark spots) or hypo pigmentation (light spots). Also, blonde hair does not respond as well to treatments. Because blonde hair has less melanin, the laser light is not absorbed into the follicle as well as it is with darker hair. Most people with blonde hair will notice a temporary hair loss initially, but the hair will eventually grow back. Newer technologies are showing greater promise with blondes, so make sure you ask your practitioner about them!

How many treatments are needed?

Typically 6-10 treatments spaced about 3-4 weeks apart are recommended for the best results.

Are the results permanent?

Most people will have permanent results if they decide to undergo an appropriate series of treatments. If you do not have enough treatments, it is possible for hair to grow back after a few years.

Should I avoid anything before Laser Hair Removal?

Yes, there are several things that you need to avoid before Laser Hair Removal:

1. Do NOT pluck, wax, or have electrolysis for at least 6 weeks before the treatment. You need some hair to be in the follicle in order for the laser to be effectively absorbed into the follicle. Shaving and depilatory creams (like Nair) are ok to use
2. Stay out of the sun. If you are treated when you have a tan, there is a higher chance of permanent pigmentation changes that can leave you with dark or lighter areas of skin
3. If you are on Accutane, or have been recently, you need to stop the treatment and wait at least 12 months before starting Laser Hair removal or any other laser treatment. Being on accutane can make your skin more sensitive and lead to pigmentation changes.
4. If you have a history of herpes simplex (cold sores), you should be started on Zovirax (or any other antiviral medication recommended by your practitioner) starting at least 1 day before treatment… especially if you are treating the upper lip or bikini line. Laser treatments of any type can reactivate cold sores and/or shingles in people who have a history of outbreaks.

What areas can be treated with Laser Hair Removal?

The most common areas treated are legs, bikini line, armpits, upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns, eyebrows, chest, and back. But almost any area on your body that has hair can be treated.

What to watch out for with Laser Hair Removal…

A word of advice… check out a few different places that offer laser hair removal. Many spas and laser centers have unqualified estheticians or nurses performing the laser treatments, which can sometimes be dangerous if they are not appropriately trained. Dont be afraid to ask questions about their credentials and their results!

For those who haven’t heard… there is a new filler available in the United States!

The FDA recently approved this hyaluronic-acid filler, known as Belotero, which can be used to treat moderate-severe facial wrinkles and folds. Belotero has been used for years in Europe and Canada, and it is very similar to other hyaluronic fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane. However, there are some key differences you should know about.

#1. Belotero is for superficial wrinkles and folds.

The main difference between Belotero and other products like Juvederm and Restylane, is that Belotero is designed to help treat superficial lines and wrinkles that are closer to surface of the skin. This is important because other HA fillers, like Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane, can produce a bluish hue under the skin if they are injected too superficially. This is called the Tyndall Effect, and can be a significant problem when inexperienced practitioners are doing the injections. The problem has supposedly been solved with Belotero, but everyone should remember that the Tyndall Effect occurs very rarely in the hands of experienced injectors.

#2. Belotero may last longer than other HA fillers.

The key word here is “may”. Most HA filler manufacturers say that their products last up to 12 months, but in reality, very few of them actually do. The average amount of time that most HA fillers last is 3-4 months. The company that makes Belotero says that it lasts 6-12 months on average, compared to 6-8 months with Juvederm. Time will tell if this is true or not…

Side Effects of Belotero.

The most common side effects from Belotero, and other hyaluronic acid fillers, are bruising, swelling, and redness around the area that was treated.  This is common after any injection, and usually resolves after about 1 week. It is also possible to develop an allergic reaction to the filler, but this is extremely rare.

The Bottom Line about Belotero.

Overall, Belotero may fill a gap in the filler industry by allowing practitioners to use it to treat superficial fine lines without having to worry about the possibility of the bluish hue. This quality may make Belotero useful for treating superficial lines between the eyes, around the mouth, or under the eyes where the skin is thin and the Tyndall Effect is more common.

As a professional makeup artist, I’ve noticed a trend that has me wondering. LIPS!

I have seen some overdone lips that no longer have a natural look. In fact it looks like some have bad allergies or puffiness from waking up after a long nap. And, I have to say, that using nude lipstick on over-filled lips confuses me as a makeup artist. The cracks in the lips are emphasized with some nude lip colors making large lips look milky and not very luscious. Additionally, if you are wearing nude lipstick, you are taking away from them which makes me wonder why you got them fuller in the first place.

If you want fuller lips, my recommendation is to attract attention to them with color! Also some face shapes and eye shapes look better with smaller lips. It really comes down to personal preference and what makes you SMILE! J Makeup is meant to enhance your features and many products can do that for you.

Lip enhancement is one of the most difficult injectible procedures, so it’s no wonder that there are so many overfilled, unnatural trout pouts! Here are my recommendations to make sure your lips turn out to be luscious instead of laughable:

1. FIND AN EXPERIENCED INJECTOR: We’ve all heard the old adage, “you’re good at what you do”, and it couldn’t be more true for advanced injections like lips and cheekbones. You definitely want to have your lips done by someone who is qualified to be doing injections in the first place, and by someone who does lots of lips (not many doctors do). Don’t be shy about asking your plastic surgeon about his or her level of experience with lip enhancement, and make sure that you trust their answer before you dive in!
2. LOOK AT BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS: One of the easiest (and best) ways to find out whether or not your injector is experienced with lip enhancement is to ask for Before & After photos. If they do not have any, or if their photos do not show consistently excellent results, you should probably go elsewhere.
3. BE REALISTIC: Lips come in all shapes and sizes. Some are extremely thin, while others are enviably full without any enhancement whatsoever. If you’re in the thin category, even the most experienced injector won’t be able to give you Angelina Jolie’s level of plump, and if you let them try, you’ll wind up looking like one of the Beverly Hills Housewives! Lip enhancement is not about having a “fuller” or larger lip. It’s about having more of the pink part of your lip (the vermillion) visible, about having the perfect balance between your upper and lower lips, and about smoothing out wrinkles on the lip surface. Your lips should not be bigger and puffier after lip injections that are done well… they should just look prettier!
4. GET SOME MAKEUP TIPS FROM A PRO: If your lips are extremely thin, remember, be realistic, and use a combination of subtle lip enhancement with a product like Juvederm, and a makeup lesson from a pro like Lindsey! Juvederm will allow more of the pink part of your lip to show so that Lindsey has a bigger canvas to work with, and as she said, a splash of the right color goes a long way towards lips that appear fuller and more fabulous!
5. IF YOU GOT BAD LIP INJECTIONS, THEY CAN BE FIXED: If you’re not happy with the result of your lip augmentation, don’t lose hope. Most of the time, there are ways to improve the results, especially if you’ve been injected with a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler like Juvederm or Restylane.

We all hate those stubborn signs of sun damage on our cheeks, neck and chest, but what we hate even more is that we’ve tried every product and cream on the planet… and nothing works!

How does IPL work?

IPL uses specific wavelengths of light to target melanin in pigmented lesions (aka sun spots) and hemoglobin in vascular lesions (aka broken capillaries). When IPL is used on sun spots, the light is absorbed and damages the melanin (the cells that create the pigmentation and darkness of the spots).  The melanin cells and small blood vessels absorb the heat of the light pulse, which causes them to be absorbed a few weeks after the treatment.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

Some people notice an improvement after one or two sessions, but most people need 3-5 treatments spaced about 2-3 weeks apart for the best result. The number of treatments varies depending on the area that’s being treated, and the extent of sun damage, and the experience of your laser practitioner. Beware of “discounted” IPL treatments that are a dime a dozen at many medi-spas. These treatments seem like a great idea when you see the price, but you usually get what you pay for. Medi-spa laser treatments are usually performed by nurses or aestheticians who have a very limited understanding of the technology, and offer everyone the same “cookie cutter” treatment without considering individual differences in skin color, texture, and tone. In addition, medi-spas don’t have access to the same advanced technology as physician-run offices or laser centers. Look for a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist that has extensive experience in laser treatments… you will pay a little more, but you get much more for your money.

What should I expect after each IPL treatment?

There is no real down time after an IPL treatment. You can immediately apply make up and go about your day like normal. You might notice that your skin is a little red for a few hours after the treatment, but the redness is rarely noticeable to anyone but you. You skin may feel a little warm, but again, it’s nothing that’s inconvenience or uncomfortable.  Some spots and freckles may appear to get a little darker after the treatment. This is totally normal and expected, and is one of the best ways to know that the melanin cells have been treated effectively. The treated spots will begin to fade after a few days, and will continue to fade over the next 2-3 weeks.

Are IPL treatments painful?

No. You will notice several discreet flashes of light and a barely perceptible pinch on your skin with each flash. Most people consider the treatments to be “very comfortable”, but it’s always possible to use numbing cream if your skin is extra sensitive.

How long do IPL results last?

The results are permanent… as long as you stay out of the sun! It is extremely important to use a good sunscreen every day during and after IPL treatments to help prevent future sun damage.

We all know that it’s the gold standard for treating fine lines and wrinkles, and that it’s very effective for treating migraines, and excessive sweating. But now, Botox is being used to prevent hair loss and treat male pattern baldness!

In a research study of 50 men who received Botox injections to their scalp experienced an 20% increase in hair growth, and a 40% decrease in hair loss! The study participants received two injection sessions spaced 6 months apart.
