Bristol Palin was reported to have jaw surgery recently to move her entire lower jaw forward and down in an effort to improve the alignment of her teeth and the overall look of her face.
Bristol is very happy with the procedure since she feels like she looks “older and more mature”, which we agree with. “She definitely looks more mature, especially in profile, and her face is in better proportion with her newly positioned jaw”, says New York Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nicholas Vendemia.
Dr. Vendemia adds, “For the most part, I think Bristol’s surgery was a success, but there are alternatives to having such a big operation with an extended recovery like Bristol’s procedure.”
Keep Reading to find out what other less invasive options Bristol may have had to re-contour her chin and jaw…
BOTOX FOR JAW CONTOURING
Botox can be used to relax and re-contour one of the large muscles of the jaw called the masseter muscle. It usually take a few treatments spaced a few weeks apart, but the treatments do not involve any significant discomfort or downtime, as compared to an operation like Bristol’s where the surgeon actually cuts into the jawbone itself. An operation like this causes a tremendous amount of bruising and swelling, which may take weeks to fully resolve, and also causes a fair amount of pain. “The results of Botox would not have been as dramatic for Bristol, but there would have been far less downtime and discomfort”, says Dr. V.
FILLERS FOR JAW CONTOURING
Fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra, and Radiesse are a fantastic nonsurgical option for jaw contouring. Fillers injections can be used to reshape the jaw in essentially any form that you and your plastic surgeon can envision, and the results are visible immediately! There is usually mild swelling, and little to no bruising associated with filler treatments. In addition, the procedure can be done in the office without anesthesia. Dr. V says, “Radiesse would have been a great nonsurgical option to give Bristol a more defined jaw and chin with much less downtime and expense than surgery.”
LIPOSUCTION NECK LIFT
“Bristol would have been a perfect candidate for a Liposuction Neck Lift along with a small amount of Radiesse along her jawline”, Dr. Vendemia adds. Neck liposuction is performed through a tiny incision (less than 1/4 inch) behind each ear. This procedure removes most of the excess fat in the neck and causes the skin to contract which ultimately leaves a tighter, more sculpted neck and jawline. Adding a bit of Radiesse would enhance the result by further defining the jaw and chin. “This procedure would be considered a surgical option, but again, the downtime and discomfort is far less than the jaw splitting operation that Bristol had.”
JAW & CHIN IMPLANTS
Jaw and chin implants are a very safe way to re-contour the jawline, and although there is some swelling and minor discomfort associated with the procedure, it is still less than jaw bone surgery. Jaw and chin implants come in all shapes and sizes, and can be placed in less than an hour. Dr. V says, “Chin implants can make an amazing difference in terms of improving a person’s profile. The implant can be placed from the inside of the mouth leaving no visible scars.” While Bristol was not really a candidate for an implant because her chin is already on the large side, chin and jaw implants are always an option to improve a weak or indistinct jawline
