Botox for Migraines…My experience (update!)

It has now been a little over 4 weeks since I got Botox injections for chronic migraines.

I wrote my original article about 2 weeks after my first treatment, and I was still having a few headaches. At that time, the headaches were different (not as intense and did not last as long), but I was still getting them.

In the time after those first 2 weeks, and one touch up to add more Botox at the base of my neck and temples, I have been almost 100% headache free (something that no medication or alternative treatment has ever been able to do). I have had a few headaches over these past weeks (maybe 2 or 3), but they have been so mild that I cannot even remember when I got them.

The real test came this past week… work was crazy, I was sleep deprived, and not eating right (I should point out that it was also a full moon). Normally, stressful weeks like this trigger a terrible migraine that will last for days. Surprisingly, I haven’t had one headache, not even a mild one!

In fact, when I sat down to start writing this update, I actually had a hard time figuring out when my last headache actually was. I am so happy (and amazed) to say that I have not felt this good since 5th grade when I first started getting these headaches.

Botox may not work for everyone who gets migraines. But if you are like me, and have tried anything and everything for migraines without any relief, give Botox a try! You definitely dont burn any bridges, and even if it doesnt help your headaches, you still get the cosmetic benefit!

Botox for Migraines. My experience…

Anyone who suffers from migraines, will agree that there is nothing worse!

The sensitivity to bright lights and loud sounds, nausea, inability to concentrate… I could go on forever. There are a wide variety of medications and treatments available to those who suffer from chronic headaches, many of which I have tried, and many of which have terrible side effects. However, the FDA recently approved a new treatment for migraines… BOTOX!

I’ve been getting migraines since I was in 5th grade, and I’ve literally tried everything from acupuncture to medications (Topamax, Imitrex, Midrin, Maxalt, Axert, etc, etc, etc) in an attempt to prevent and treat them. Topamax was the only medication that actually helped, but the side effects were worse than the headaches themselves. Afters years of searching for the right medication, I started to wonder if I would ever be able to get rid of my headaches… I didn’t know what to do or if there was anything else I could try. That’s when I started looking into Botox for migraine prevention.

There has been extensive research on this topic, and last year FDA approved Botox for treatment of chronic migraines. And although it varies from person to person, most of the study results showed a significant improvement in headaches after Botox. In fact, one study compared Botox and Topomax, and they found that there was similar improvements in frequency and intensity of headaches.

I was a little skeptical, but I gave up on the meds and decided to give Botox a try. I got a total of 45 units of Botox injected into my temples, forehead, between my eyes, and base of my neck, none of which hurt!

Within 3 days, I noticed a difference. Not only did I love the cosmetic benefit (I swear my eyes look more open and awake), but I was no longer getting my daily headaches! A huge improvement, with none of the side effects I had with the medications.

Two weeks after my first treatment, I (unfortunately) have I gotten a couple of headaches, but they are much less intense, and don’t happen as often! Before the Botox, I got a headache just about every day, and now I get a much milder headache once or twice a week. Even when I get one, I don’t feel like I need to lie down in a dark room anymore.

I have realized over the years that my headaches will probably never stop completely, but Botox is the first treatment that really made a difference without bad side effects. I will definitely be keeping up with the Botox treatments in the future.
